Reflection · The Passion of JesusDo you understand why the disciples fled and left Jesus?
Yes, the disciples fled because they were gripped by immediate fear for their lives, deeply disillusioned by Jesus' non-resistant surrender, and spiritually confused about His mission. When an armed mob arrived to arrest Jesus, the disciples faced a sudden crisis that exposed their human limitations: Self-Preservation: Faced with swords and clubs, their natural human instinct was to run to avoid arrest or execution. Shattered Expectations: They expected a military Messiah who would fight and conquer Rome. When Jesus willingly surrendered and stopped Peter from fighting back, their political hopes collapsed in an instant. Lack of Spiritual Sight: They could not yet see that Jesus' arrest was a necessary part of God’s plan for salvation, viewing it instead as total failure and defeat even though at the last supper Jesus told them what was to come. Ultimately, they fled because their fear and misunderstanding overwhelmed their faith in that high-stress moment.
